Arabic coffee comes with a conversation about how to welcome people. UNESCO describes its preparation and serving as a daily ritual, passed between generations through family and community life.

The details matter. Older people and guests are served first; coffee is poured with the right hand. A guest can gently shake the cup to show that they have finished. These gestures make a gathering easier to read without interrupting it.

The practice also belongs to weddings, community meetings and the majlis. Poetry, discussion and shared memories can accompany the coffee. The drink creates an occasion to spend time together.

UNESCO’s current listing includes Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It was extended in 2024, following the original 2015 inscription.

Customs can vary between households. If you are offered a cup, follow your host’s lead. The useful thing to notice is the care behind the offer.
